Protecting Reefs, Protects People
Worldwide coral reef ecosystems are in crisis. The global pressure of climate change along with local human induced pressures are contributing to the rapid deterioration of coral reefs ecosystems – jeopardizing the lives of the millions of people that rely on these coastal resources. The Coral Reef Rescue: Resilient Coral Reefs, Resilient Communities Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is focused on safeguarding globally significant climate resilient coral reefs in six countries: Fiji, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Philippines, Madagascar and Tanzania.
Through an inclusive and integrated approach, the GEF CRR project will:
‘build capacity and solutions that ensure the long-term survival of climate refuge coral reef ecosystems to conserve their biodiversity and support the blue economies and communities that depend on them’
Project Year 2 is Underway!
The GEF 7 Coral Reef Rescue Project is starting to make waves! In six countries, we are taking a deep dive into:
• Capacity strengthening for coral reef conservation
• Establishing inclusive governance and planning processes which address local threats to coral resilient reefs
• Supporting the alignment of co-finance and investment opportunities that support coral reef conservation
• Communicating awareness of the significance of climate resilient reefs to ensure their survival.
